Kelly Smith suggests that you keep a running spreadsheet of the guests you interview. It’s a good idea but I would also suggest keeping a calender on your desktop with reminders.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve missed an interview because I got caught up doing something else. I use Zoho Booking tools which integrates with my Google Calendar. That way even if i’m just on my phone I get a reminder about my appointments. I really do dislike the interruptions of notifications on my phone. But I realize that in this case it’s not a a tool I want to do without.

You can also integrate Zoho booking tool with their free CRM so you can collect the emails of your contacts as well.

My podcast guest, Dustin Polyinnovator swears by Notion. But if you don’t currently have asystem in place start with Google sheets. The creators of PodMatch also created PodSOP which is a template system featuring Standard Operating Procedures for podcasters. You can copy the templates and use them as your own.

It doesn’t really matter what system you use. But in order to protect your mental health and avoid podcaster burnout, you do need a system when podcasting, especially if you do everything yourself or are juggling other responsibilities.

Get enough sleep

When you’re well-rested, you’re better able to focus and be creative. So sleep. I remember when I started a nonprofit in the early 2000’s I was so excited about the venture that I stayed up almost 24/7 working on it. I was excited but I was running on adreneline. I didn’t want to close my eyes because I was too excited all while taking care of a family 6.

When you’re recording, turn off your notifications and tell everyone you’re recording so they don’t disturb you. In order to keep your focus and maintain your mental health it is important to give yourself space to work and create in peace.

I get in trouble a lot with my family because I tend to get lost in my work. I find that it’s the best way for me to work. To compartmentalize my life and focus on the task at hand instead of getting dragged around by everyone else’s agenda.
